The wine project (winehq.org) provides an abstraction layer which interprets Microsoft O/S calls into the relevent kernel instructions for the underlying O/S (e.g., into Linux kernel calls). This allows software which is written for Microsoft Windows to be run under other operating systems such as Linux.
